By Editor, Times of San Diego 36 mins ago The Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park is extending its deadline to apply for the Better Education for Women in Science and Engineering (BE WiSE) program. The new deadline is Friday, Feb. 19. BE WiSE is a free program that engages girls in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning experiences in collaboration with the region's research, industry and academic institutions. Last year, the Fleet Science Center accepted 130 girls into BE WiSE and hosted over 30 events throughout the year. Every year there are six cohorts, with a total of 730 girls now in the program. The program sparks girls' interest in STEM through interactions with professionals, increases participants' opportunities and knowledge of STEM fields of study, as well as develops a community of girls engaged in science learning throughout middle and high school. Once accepted into the program, girls will interact with successful women working in STEM-related careers, while attending workshops held virtually, at STEM companies, local universities and research facilities. Applications of girls in grades 7 and 8 must include a teacher recommendation and a personal essay in order to be considered for the program. Once accepted, BE WiSE girls attend a virtual orientation as their first activity and continue to be invited to various science workshops throughout the year. To submit an application and for more information, visit www.fleetscience.org/application or at the Fleet Science Center at 1875 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101.
