Salve Regina Implements Shelter-In-Place Amid Coronavirus Spike

NEWPORT, RI — Following a surge of coronavirus cases on campus, a shelter-in-place order is in place at Salve Regina University. The order will stay in place until at least Feb. 16. While the lockdown is in place, all classes will be held online and students who live on campus will be required to stay in their dorms except for essential errands. These include outdoor exercise, getting food or medicine, getting tested for COVID-19 or other "official university business." The spring semester began Jan. 19 and will end April 23. At the recommendation of the Rhode Island Department of Health, there will not be a spring break this year. "Given the fluid nature of the pandemic," the university has not yet decided what options will be available to students for the Easter holiday. At the state's weekly coronavirus news conference Department of Health Director Nicole Alexander-Scott said that the department has been working closely with colleges and universities to make sure plans are in place for surges in coronavirus cases.
