The Gee's Bend Quilting Collective is a group of Black women textile artists in Gee's Bend, Alabama. Using quilting traditions that date back to their enslaved ancestors in the 1800s, the quilters use scraps of fabric to create amazing works of colorful, intricate art. Largely unknown for many years, the quilters gained recognition in 1998 when a local art collector came to Gee's Bend and purchased three quilts. The art world quickly took notice, and the first Gee's Bend quilt exhibition was held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in September of 2002. The quilts were compared to the works of Henri Matisse and Paul Klee, famous European artists. The quilters of Gee's Bend eventually formed a collective, sharing the profits from their quilts, which now sell for thousands of dollars.
