Press release from the City of Phoenix: February 4, 2021 City of Phoenix District 7 Councilman Michael Nowakowski participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday to celebrate the grand re-opening of Yunya Park, 2831 W. Washington St. A small group of city staff joined in the festivities, while community members from the nearby neighborhood enjoyed the new park features. The renovation of the quarter-acre pocket park, originally built in 1948, was recently completed. The project included installation of a new playground with amenities for those ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12, as well as a resurfaced basketball court with new poles, backboards and rims. Additionally, a new walking path was installed, along with a grill, benches and picnic table. Improvements also included new landscaping, turf, trees and an irrigation system. The project cost approximately $215,000 and was funded by the voter-approved Phoenix Parks and Preserve Initiative (PPPI). Being outdoors is important for health and wellness, and the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department encourages residents to get outside, get exercise and practice responsible physical distancing while exploring all that the city's park system has to offer. City of Phoenix parks, hiking trails and golf courses have remained open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but use of some park amenities is being restricted – including basketball and volleyball courts, fitness equipment, ramadas and picnic tables, and sports complexes. Detailed information about the city's outdoor recreational options, free and fee-based virtual recreational programs for all ages and ability levels, and guidelines for how to responsibly use city parks and trails during the pandemic is available at Phoenix.gov/Parks.
