Description

Unusual and admittedly downright strange request. I'm a 33 year old Anthropology graduate who gave up on what was already in 2009 a basically dead field (no more virgin Trobrian islanders to document, huh) and ended up going into something more lucrative and ultimately totally unsatisfying. I'm proposing to hire a tutor to meet with me somewhere, maybe a coffee shop or library, twice a week. For 1-2 hours per visit. I'm an avid reader and I'm particularly interested in European medieval history or antiquity. I am personally trying to develop an essay on education, and how schools have developed from the classical gymnasium (those of, say Antisthenes or Socrates) into what we have today - essentially standardized, technocratic, automated, massively profitable businesses. But I'd like to steep the project in a deep understanding of the evolution of schools. From antiquity through what seems to be the next most interesting phase, early Byzantine; through the medieval Christian epoch, followed by the development of public education in the western world. I think anyone with a graduate degree in medieval or classical history could be a lot of help. Mostly I'm starved for an ounce of inspiration and someone qualified to bounce ideas off of. I'm proposing to pay $50/hour. I can pay daily, weekly, however you'd like. But I'd like to find someone who can help direct my reading and at least bring some formal education to the table. I'm a pretty friendly person and I imagine this could be a good and long-term situation for the right person. Anyway thanks for reading!
