SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA—The tolling of the bells at Mission San Juan Capistrano announced its reopening on Thursday. Throughout the pandemic, the bells of the famed mission have tolled only a few times, in honor of members in the community who have lost their lives due to coronavirus. In December, the state of California closed for a second time in-person personal business, dining, as well as museums and zoos. This included the Mission San Juan Capistrano, which shuttered its gates to volunteer docents and visitors. Over 24 workers were furloughed, according to a report in the OC Register. Volunteers who maintain the gardens and give tours were sent home. Thursday, Executive Director of the mission, Mechelle Lawrence Adams, spoke on a new day dawning as California reopens for many. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the mission's hours are shortened, though the grounds are now available for visiting "in small groups," according to Adams. Father Serra's Chapel is once again open for those who wish to light a candle for loved ones. "Our tradition is to ring the bells in moments of celebration and mournful times," Adams told the Register. The mission's retired bell ringer, Acjachemen tribe member Michael Gastelum, was on hand to do the honors. Visit the Mission from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday.
