Description

Seacoast Pathways, a clubhouse in Portsmouth for adults in the process of mental health recovery, has a podcast designed to help anyone who is working through mental health challenges. The show begins with the intro voice boldly proclaiming: "We're here to talk about mental illness." The podcast is a joint effort between staff and members at Seacoast Pathways. The goal is to fight the stigma of mental illness through confronting it directly. The mere fact that members are speaking openly and honestly on the podcast serves as an effective therapy in and of itself. Like a fear or worry, stigma can grow to distorted proportions. By talking about it openly members feel it helps normalize their journeys and how they see themselves. The show, "Seacoast Pathways Clubhouse Live," currently has 25 episodes and is going strong. The podcast is recorded during clubhouse hours, hence the "Clubhouse Live" title. It has listeners in New England and several other states as well as a few foreign countries. Each podcast deals with different topics and approaches to mental illness. Some are interviews such as former New Hampshire Chief Justice Broderick conducted by Gina Pike. Broderick has been traveling around the state talking to students, teachers, parents and anyone who will listen about the importance of talking openly about mental illness. Gina has also interviewed state senator Dr. Tom Sherman who has advocated widely for Seacoast Pathways as well as changes in our state's mental health delivery services and Donna Brazzeau, head of NAMI"s Family to Family Support group. Other shows find members informally talking about mental health from their own perspectives covering topics such as seasonal depression, positive ways they are dealing with their problems, or events happening in the clubhouse that are directed towards mental health recovery.Recently, local author Brittany Eldridge was interviewed about her personal journey and the books she has written that are available on Amazon.com There's even some comedy. Four episodes entitled "Trash Plunders" features a staff and member who share the same passion for sifting through unwanted items throughout the seacoast, telling of their adventures good and bad. It has a fake audience laugh track to liven things up. The podcast is available at a number of outlets including iTunes, Spotify and its flagship home Podbean.com. Just search Seacoast Pathways Clubhouse Live and start listening.
