CONCORD, NH — Several local food banks and pantries will receive a financial helping hand from Merrimack County Savings Bank after local residents contributed nearly 400 winter accessories including hats and mittens that will be distributed to families in need.
The Merrimack announced this week it will donate a total of $1,000 to the Friendly Kitchen in Concord, Hooksett Community Food Pantry, Hopkinton Food Pantry, the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter, and the Twin Rivers Interfaith Food Pantry in Franklin as part of the community effort.
The bank's annual Mitten Tree program led to 388 winter items — including hats, mittens, gloves and scarves — to be collected from residents and will be distributed to local families who need the items most, the Merrimack announced this week. Bank officials said that many of the items are collected at the end of the winter and then contributed the next year while other items are handmade and then donated as part of the effort.
"The Mitten Tree is a wonderful program that grows each year," Linda Lorden, President of Merrimack County Savings Bank said in a news release. "Not only are we able to gather hundreds of hats, mittens, scarves and gloves for those who need them, but we also contributed to organizations that provide food to local families and individuals in need."
