Description
Members of the Lyons Township High School Congressional Debate Team earned several medals at a recent Illinois Congressional Debate Association tournament.
Four students won individual awards:
Aidan Joyce: junior (LaGrange) - earned Best Presiding Officer and second place speaker in his chamber Loretta Walker: junior (LaGrange Park) - earned Best Presiding Officer and second place speaker in her chamber Ahmad Ayyeh: senior (Brookfield) - earned third place best speaker in his chamber Thomas Hennessy: sophomore (LaGrange) - medaled, earning Best Presiding Officer in his chamber In addition, Walker and Joyce received third place best legislation for the bill they wrote.
Students involved in Congressional Debate follow the procedures of the senators and representatives in Washington D.C. They write legislation, work in committees, and debate their own bills and resolutions. Speeches are judged, points are accumulated, and both individual and team trophies are awarded by point totals and student voting.
The team is coached by Social Studies teacher Tom Swiontek and assisted by fellow teachers Joan Cushing and Maria Ricker.
