Are you looking to help the most vulnerable in our community during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis? The Atascadero Winter Emergency Shelter (AWES) provides emergency shelter for some of the homeless men, women, and children in SLO County during the coldest nights. Please consider helping AWES out during these trying times as we continue to provide services to those in our county who need it the most! The shelter will open in November and continue throughout April. At AWES, the health and safety of our clients, volunteers, and staff are always our top priority. We understand there are growing concerns around COVID-19. Rest assured we are taking the upmost precaution during this time and abiding by SLO County Public Health and CDC recommendations: - Everyone must wash their hands with soap and water before entering the building. -Clients will be screened for symptoms and have their temperatures taken prior to entering the shelter. - Clients will be required to wear masks while in the shelter and awake. -Staff and volunteers will use sanitizing wipes to sanitize all high use handrails, doorknobs, tables, chairs etc. once an hour. -To increase social distancing, a limited number of clients will be served each night. Beds will be placed at least 6 feet apart and plexiglass shields will be provided between each bed to add an extra level of safety. Currently, our biggest need is Overnight Chaperone Volunteers. Position Description: Two volunteers stay overnight with the guests, and a staff member, as chaperones to help supervise the evening. There are 3 types of shift options: Shift 1: The shift starts at 6:30 pm and ends at midnight. Shift 2: The shift starts at 5:30 am and ends at 7 am Shift 3: The shift starts at 6:30 pm and ends at 7 am Before your first shift, you will go through training to prepare you for the night. There will be an overnight staff member there at all times, who has been trained and employed by ECHO (El Camino Homeless Organization). This volunteer position is unique among organizations because it provides the chance to get to know our clients in a personal way.
