Staff Report, the Miami Times Feb 2, 2021 The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) annual Art + Soul fundraising event – usually decked out with extravagant art décor, talented Black artists and prominent members of the community – goes virtual this year on Saturday at 7 p.m., and it's not too late to buy your ticket. The 8th annual Art + Soul celebration supports PAMM's Fund for African American Art, allowing the museum to purchase and showcase contemporary pieces from artists in the African diaspora and further diversify Miami's artistic pool. Established in 2013, the fund acquired a total of 20 works from distinguished artists such as Terry Adkins, Kevin Beasley, Nari Ward, Lorraine O'Grady, Faith Ringgold, Tschabalala Self and Juana Valdes to be added to PAMM's permanent collection. Donations to sustain the fund is obtained through PAMM Ambassadors for African American Art, sponsors and support from the community through events like Art + Soul. Keeping up with the traditions of the annual event, the usual "Reveal" and "Celebration Party" segments will be incorporated, but via livestream. "Reveal" will feature art acquisitions, tributes and a conversation between Red Rooster restaurateurs Derek Fleming and chef Marcus Samuelsson, and PAMM director Franklin Sirmans. "Celebration Party" follows with journalist Neki Mohan as host and ends with music by DJ Pam Jones. The event initially offered three opportunities for the community to contribute to the fundraiser. PAMM partnered with local Black businesses to bring a more interactive experience that enlightens the senses during the streaming. The highest ranking options are already sold out. Those who spent $1,000 by the Feb. 1 deadline will receive a special delivered entrée for two with wine and Champagne, courtesy of event honoree Samuelsson. A $5,000 spend bought dinner for six. Art enthusiasts are invited to purchase tickets for the last available option, a celebration-only viewing package, for $75. Tickets and additional information can be found at pamm.org/artsoul2021. The Miami Times is the largest Black-owned newspaper in the south serving Miami's Black community since 1923. The award-winning weekly is frequently recognized as the best Black newspaper in the country by the National Newspaper Publishers Association.
