Miami Times Staff Report Feb 2, 2021 Trombone player Wycliffe Gordon will perform at Pinecrest Gardens on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. Tickets to the pay-per-view livestream concert are $15 and may be purchased at pinecrestgardens.org/jazzaid. The Georgia-born graduate of Florida's A&M University is best known for his work with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of jazz maestro Wynton Marsalis. Gordon can scat, multi-note, slide and plunge, just like he stepped out of the 1930s. He has played with many jazz luminaries, including Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Henderson, Branford Marsalis, Lionel Hampton, Tommy Flanagan and Shirley Horn. Marsalis first heard Gordon play while the trumpeter was giving a workshop at his alma mater. That meeting resulted in Gordon joining the Wynton Marsalis Septet, as well as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, in 1989. As a member of the illustrious ensemble, Gordon contributed as both musician and composer. Gordon's exceptional technique and signature sound has earned him a place in musical history as one of the top trombonists of his generation. He was named "Best in Trombone" by the Downbeat Critics Poll three years running, while the Jazz Journalists Association has named him "Trombonist of the Year" eight times. The upcoming Valentine's Day weekend performance at Pinecrest Gardens is part of the "JazzAid Live at the Banyan Bowl" concert series, created to help feed America and bring jazz masters to the homes and hearts of viewers nationwide. A generous percentage of the proceeds from this COVID-19 relief fundraiser will go directly to World Central Kitchen, an organization that feeds tens of thousands of people in times of crisis, from the coronavirus pandemic to hurricanes and earthquakes.
