Your Arlington Last Updated: 03 February 2021 | Hits: 787 Dr. Matthew Janger, who has been principal at Arlington High School since 2013, is among three finalists for superintendent of the Reading Public Schools. A decision is expected Feb. 11. "I am honored to be considered for this position in Reading," he told YourArlington Feb. 2. "I believe that I can make a positive contribution in the lives of students as superintendent, and Reading is a wonderful community. "The thought of leaving Arlington High School is certainly bittersweet. I have been principal at Arlington for almost eight years and raised my family here. I love the school and the community." Other finalists Also vying for the top spot in Reading are Thomas Milaschewski, superintendent resident (concurrent with doctoral studies) for the Medford Public Schools, and Stephen J. Zadravec, superintendent for the Portsmouth, N.H., School Department. The Reading School Committee voted Jan. 28 to reduce the candidate pool to three finalists. The story was first reported Jan. 29 on Reading Patch, where you can find the finalists' resumes. Patch is a YourArlington partner. Throughout his years in Arlington, Janger played a key role in planning the new high school, aiming for completion in 2024, and supporting the public appeals that led to its funding. The 56-year-old also led initiatives focused on diversity, inclusivity, student support and technology. AHS top-rated Under his leadership, Arlington High School has finished in U.S. News' top 25 high schools in Massachusetts for seven years. See the magazine's 2020 ranking >> Janger, with degrees from Michigan, Yale and Williams, was previously principal of Mount Desert Island High School in Maine and was an English teacher and a principal in Ann Arbor, Mich. The next Reading superintendent will take over June 30. This news breaks as Arlington has hired a new superintendent, Dr. Elizabeth Homan, who is coming from Waltham. She plans to begin a transition period here Feb. 22, as she works with Dr. Kathleen Bodie, who is retiring in June. In announcing the appointment to AHS in February 2013, Bodie wrote: "Dr. Janger brings to his new role strong administrative and teaching experience, as well as a deep understanding of best educational practices in schools. He has a thoughtful, approachable leadership style and a good sense of humor." YourArlington.com has provided news and opinion about Arlington, Mass., since 2006.
