Community offers something for every interest, right on campus For residents at Wind Crest, a senior living community developed and managed by Erickson Living in Douglas County, Colo., there’s never a shortage of things to do. For those who like to exercise, the community features five fitness centers as well as two indoor pools. Those pursuing creative endeavors take advantage of multiple art studios and classrooms throughout campus. To relax a bit or read up on a favorite subject, there are also two libraries on campus. These are just a few of the many amenities and services available to Wind Crest residents. But for many, the primary attraction might just be the community’s picturesque location in the foothills of the Rockies, with beautiful trails throughout and surrounding the community, where residents love to hike, bike, run, and walk. Back where he belongs When Ken Fuller thought about the best place for him to retire, the answer was easy: Colorado. Although he worked for New York Life Insurance Company for 37 years and lived in New Jersey, he previously served in the Air Force and his first assignment was at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. “I knew I was coming back one of these days,” says Ken. Although Ken had visited two other communities managed by Erickson Living in New Jersey, when he found out about Wind Crest, he was hooked. But what sealed the deal for him was the High Line Canal Trail. An avid runner, Ken has run the Boston Marathon and the Marine Corps Marathon, among others. Running along the High Line Canal Trail fuels him every day. Starting at 4:30 a.m., Ken runs along the trail seven days a week. He also does martial arts a few times a week in his apartment. “I’m running 100 miles a week,” says Ken, who has lived at Wind Crest for 10 years. “Those pristine trails are beautiful. “I just love this place. It’s perfect.” Happy trails Norm Fox, the third resident to move into Wind Crest when it opened in 2007, is an expert on the High Line Canal and its accompanying trail. “It was an irrigation canal back in 1883—really a phenomenon when they built it because it was all done with hand labor,” says Norm. He has a close relationship with the trail because not only has he been walking it since the 1970s, but because he is a pioneer member of the High Line Canal Conservancy. The conservancy works to preserve the 71-mile-long trail, one of the longest continuous urban trails in the country. “I have walked the length of the Canal four times—not in one day, obviously,” jokes Norm. The Canal was originally constructed to bring water from the South Platte River to farmers who lived along it through 165 headgates. There is also a plethora of wildlife. Norm says there are deer, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, Elk, moles and other tiny animals. And the number of birds seems endless. “We have our own family of great-horned owls, right in Wind Crest, that I’ve been following for 12 years. They come back every year and have a new nest,” says Norm. “We have lots of red-tailed hawks, kestrel and peregrine falcons, gosh—I could go on and on.” Although he’s lived at Wind Crest since the beginning and knows the High Line Canal Trail better than most, Norm says that he still loves it. “There’s just something new every day.” Come see the beauty of Wind Crest’s vibrant campus and the High Lane Canal Trail for yourself.
