In this course students will learn the advanced techniques required to forge a knife from a railroad spike. Instructor: Kenneth Spivey Summary: In this course students will learn the advanced techniques required to forge a knife from railroad spikes. Description: Students will utilize their skill and test their stamina in the process of forging a knife from a railroad spike. The intermediate course requires more skill and is more challending than the previous beginner course. Concepts Covered: Safety Forging Blacksmith terms Stretching metal Hammering techniques Quenching Tempering Filing Sanding Sharpening Polish It is suggested that you take a beginner course for those who have never had any forging experience though it is not required All tools and material will be provided. Students must wear the appropriate attire, which consist of: 100% cotton long sleeve pants 100% cotton long sleeve or over shirt Closed toed shoes or boots. (Please Note: No polyester is to be worn and long hair must be tied back.) Ticket Sales end two days before the event begins.Please be prepared to supply an contact phone number in case of last minute scheduling changes.About the Instructor: Working with metal since he was a teen, Kennen has turned his love of creation into something he can share with the world. Creating collections of jewelry, knives, keychains, furniture and a large assortment of projects and customed commission pieces Kennen continues to grow and expand his portfolio trying new things and pushing himself to new levels. Kennen studied art at the University of Montevallo where he received his BS in studio art and MA in art education. He is currently continuing his education and pursuing an MFA at SCAD in Atlanta. He has been working with metal for 13 years and forging for the past 10. Frequently Asked Questions: Q: When do ticket sales end? A: Ticket sales end two days before the event begins. Q: How many people can sign up? A: Each class has a maximum of 8 people. Ideally, participants will attend all three classes.   Q: Is there an age requirement? A: Students must be above the age of 15, Students under 18 will either need to be accompanied by a parent or gaurdian or will require additional permission paperwork.   Q: What sort of equipment is required? Q: What is the refund policy? A: We will refund any ticket requested for any reason up to a week before the course runs, after that point we can only give credit to a future course. If the class cannot run as scheduled, for whatever reason, purchaser will have the option of a full refund or credit towards the makeup course.
