Description

Woodworking apprenticeship transforming an industrial building into photo production facility. Please read carefully: This offering can be in exchange for someone looking to apprentice real skills such as cabinetry, woodworking, metal work, or sewing in canvas/leather. We could provide monies yet would like to have a person seeking to broaden their own creating skills. This could also be an exchange to have access to shop space or bench space for jewelry making, artist space etc. This is open to discussion. I am located in East Williamsburg and run a multi material workshop. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to gain real skills or usage in woodworking, light metal work or industrial sewing- all while gaining exposure to their own ability to create projects and own craft. Email a response and if interested in your description I will respond with a link to our website project. The Multi material workshop: We have the capability to work in all woods from veneers to even logs with the bark still on. We having some welding and we are able to work in light metals. We have industrial sewing machines- can even sew heavy duty leather or canvas. Literally we can work in many medians. Literally I can teach many cross and overlapping skills, from wood finishing to distressing to make wood look like its’ a 100 yrs old. With these skills, we restore, repair and repurpose many vintage items and make unique displays using many vintage and distressed items. If you are interested in vintage items and like fixing, repairing or restoring- you couldn’t find a more engaging shop environment. We have a resource and materials such as Barnwood, vintage Hardware, distress metal artifacts - 200 different strands of barbed wire a hundred fifty years old - this is a Disneyland for vintage affectionados. We even renovate vintage motorhomes and trailers. We have one parked in our building! We also carry a full gamut of building materials from solid wood to all kinds of Fasteners, Etc. I am a full fledged woodworker who has done the full gamut of commercial woodworking/ cabinetry and trained many fledgling-eager to learn people onward to become full cabinetmakers, hands on industrial designers- great builders. At times many former employees call me asking a technical question whereby we reaffirm our time spent together. I cannot help but silhouette how they struggled with complex work yet now complex and careful work is part of how they value themselves. Although I have financial challenges today, my stewarding skills towards others are real and give me tremendous purpose in life. I have something real and no one can take this away. Having said the above, I showcase and repurpose vintage items, from industrial artifacts; restoring farm furniture; mid century lamps; vintage Americana graphics to retro eye frames. I do this to support myself but more so I am finding a cadence whereby bringing these items back to life jettisons many of our current values of a throw-away society. This is not all roses; at times I am overworked and my work ethic doesn’t protect me from this. Even in the din of night, self-overworked I can teach others the skills to find beauty. In a wood crate recovered from a barn, inside wrapped in old newspaper I found a handmade shoe organizer made from recycled feed sacks and a toy made from a carefully taken apart cigar boxes. I know the effort it takes to make such artifacts. Currently we are transforming our industrial building here in Williamsburg from a multi purpose shop into a photo / Film Production facility. The space will continue to have a working shop yet I have other shop facilities out of state. See enclosed photo. Not necessarily the scope of this learning opportunity, in transforming this industrial building into a photo production space there will be ongoing work for posting the various artifact displays we build and create on social media, organizing and taking photos of artifacts to be utilized as rentable props to attract the kind of energy to draw people to the space. It's a living vibrant space how vintage objects have meaning towards culturally where are we going? It should be a place where work has meaning and is rewarding as in self-challenging towards growing. If you can sense the cadence of my words above, I offer an interdisciplinary approach to work that's a lifelong journey. I teach graciously not because I have all these skills but rather these skills allow me to approach work as a continual learning process. This is a compass to find meaning in work. Also of Interest is someone who has video editing and video production skills. This is not the project where you're supposed to make Coca Cola look like a breakfast healthy choice. For a video artist, this is a project in the vernacular. You want to show people making mistakes, struggling and intuiting how to overcome seemingly difficulty translating into self skills. Must reply with what you are looking for, an apprenticeship or shop space? I am open to a hybrid partial exchange with some pay. If you or a video artist or photographer please mention, this may not require many hours. Please respond with phone # & your background skills. Respond back with your experience & a detailed description of yourself for further information or contact. For shop space exchange please indicate in title email reply. For keyword search: Cabinetmaker, Woodworker, craftsman, Apprentice, apprenticeship, jewelry maker, shopspace, workspace, metal worker, metalworker, benchspace, bench space. Artist space. Handyman, handy man, photographer, video artist, video editing. Would prefer someone local to East Williamsburg (Bushwick, Greenpoint, etc.). This shop is a great learning experience for a moderate or low level skilled person. We are willing to train a person in cabinetmaking / woodworking skills.
