BEL AIR, MD — A Bel Air church has been designated a Harford County historic landmark. Clark's Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church has one of the oldest historically African American congregations in the Bel Air area, according to a statement from Harford County government. Built between 1883 and 1855, the church drew a congregation of free and enslaved Black people. "We are proud to protect this important piece of Harford's history during Black History Month," County Executive Glassman said in a statement Wednesday, after the Harford County Council approved the historic designation at its Tuesday night meeting. "With this designation, we can preserve the building and the story of its African-American congregation for future generations," Glassman said. The stucco church on Kalmia Road and its adjacent graveyard are included in the designation.
