LONG BEACH, NY — The Long Beach City Council announced on Tuesday that it was filing a lawsuit against 12 employees to recoup money that was improperly paid to them. The suit is part of the city's ongoing litigation revolving around its retirement payout scandal, which saw many employees receive millions in separation payments they were not entitled to under the city charter. Officials from the city said it was suing the 12 employees for $174,751. Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas investigated the payouts and found no criminality."Our exhaustive investigation found that these payments were the result of shocking ignorance of the Long Beach laws and ordinances, the incompetence and negligence of the officials charged with executing them, and a total abdication of oversight by the prior City Council," Singas said when her investigation was released.
