SARASOTA, FL — The Salvation Army Center of Hope at 1400 10th Street in Sarasota will open as a cold weather shelter for the homeless and others in need Wednesday night, Sarasota County Emergency Services shared to its Facebook page. The county has coordinated with municipal partners and the Salvation Army to open the shelter, as temperatures are expected to drop Wednesday night. Temperatures will drop as low as 39 degrees with winds ranging from 12 to 22 miles per hour, according to AccuWeather. Intake begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening. Dinner will be served prior to this at 5 p.m., while breakfast will be served Friday at 5:30 a.m. The 100 Church at 14525 Tamiami Trail in North Port will open a cold weather shelter at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2021. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. Emergency Management officials also reminded for residents that pets shouldn't be left outside in the cold weather and citizens who are outside overnight "are encouraged to dress in several warm layers and limit skin exposure to the wind." Sarasota County Fire Department officials also advise citizens to use caution when heating their homes. The risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning increases during cold weather due to the improper use of heating devices, the county said.
