Plainview Water District Asks To 'Adopt' A Fire Hydrant

PLAINVIEW, NY — The Plainview Water District is asking residents to "adopt" a fire hydrant and keep it clear of snow and other debris to make it easier for first responders to access in an emergency. "You never know when or where an emergency is going to occur, so never assume that the fire hydrant in front of your home won't be needed," stated PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader in a news release. "We also encourage residents to never assume someone else will clear the hydrant, so please communicate with your neighbors to ensure it is cleared in a timely fashion." Residents can "adopt" a fire hydrant by pledging to report issues and making sure that about three feet is cleared around the hydrant to provide firefighters with "uninterrupted access" in an emergency, officials said. The three feet will provide enough room for emergency personnel to operate the device as well as locate it. "Making sure the fire department has quick and easy access to fire hydrants at all times saves precious moments that should be used to responding to an emergency," stated water district chairman Marc Laykind. The water district is also asking residents to consider helping neighbors, family members and friends who can't clear fire hydrants on their own. Residents who leave their homes for the winter season are also asked to notify neighbors who can make sure someone is responsible for clearing a hydrant while they are away, officials said. "The safety of our community is always our foremost priority, which is why we are so emphatic about making sure this simple yet vital step is not overlooked," stated Commissioner Amanda Field. "We appreciate the attention of our residents on this simple, yet crucial, task."
