TEMECULA, CA — Concerns about an active shooter in Temecula Sunday night were unfounded, but someone setting off illegal firecrackers was not. Just before 6 p.m., patrons at several Vail Ranch businesses heard what sounded like gunfire in the 32000 block of Temecula Parkway, according to Riverside County Sheriff's Sgt. Lionel Murphy. There was no active shooter. Instead, a suspect "set off firecrackers in a store, causing panic," Murphy said. The person who allegedly set off the illegal fireworks was inside the Ross Dress For Less store at 32155 Temecula Parkway and threatening customers, according to several unconfirmed social media reports that indicated people were ducking for cover. The incident prompted a response from Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department as well as sheriff's deputies. There was no immediate word on arrests and the investigation continues. Firecrackers and fireworks are illegal in most of Riverside County, including Temecula.
