In this 2 day course students will learn how to transform raw lumber into working material in order to make two styles of cutting boards.   Instructor: Delia Lopez   Summary: In this 2 day course students will learn how to transform raw lumber into working material in order to make two styles of cutting boards.    Description: Students will receive a thorough demonstration on shop safety and proper use of each machine.  The instructor will then discuss types of wood and including choosing one species over another for specific projects.   Sufficient demos and in depth answers to questions are provided.  You are encouraged to take design risks and have fun!   Simple examples are provided as a starting point, but students are encouraged to use their creativity to design and execute more complicated additions.  Each students will create two finished cutting boards during this course. CONCEPTS COVERED: Machine safety- Table Saw, Band Saw, Jointer, Planer and SandersFour squaring a piece of raw lumber - "order of operations"Differences in face grain, end grain, edge grain and the effect on function.Proper glue-up techniquesProper finishing- sanding, oiling etc. Ticket Sales end two days before the event begins. Please be prepared to supply an contact phone number in case of last minute scheduling changes.   About the Instructor: Delia Lopez fell in love with the art of design and the satisfaction of making while a student at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.  After graduating in 2008 she started her own woodworking business designing and making cutting boards and unique pieces of furniture.  For the past three years she has taught woodworking, wood shop safety, and prototype making at the very school that began her career.  Her passion for good design and exceptional craftsmanship inspires and empowers students to explore their own ideas and succeed at completing them with a high level of craft.   FAQs   Where can I contact the organizer with any questions? Yes, please notify us before ticket sales end about any transfer of purchase.   What is the refund policy? We will refund any ticket requested for any reason up to a week before the course runs, after that point we can only give credit to a future course. If the class cannot run as scheduled, for whatever reason, purchaser will have the option of a full refund or credit towards the makeup course. Courses must sell a minimum of three tickets to run. If a course cannot sell three tickets, the students who have signed up will have the option to (a) reschedule or (b) receive a full refund. This notification will be issued when ticket sales end, approximately 48 hours before the course.
