DUPAGE COUNTY, IL — A 22-year-old Roselle woman is behind bars on a $500,000 bail over accusations she dumped boiling water on her boyfriend while he slept, then posted a video of the horrifying act on Snapchat, authorities said.
Alexis Sykes, of the 0 to 100 block of West Central Avenue, was taken into custody days after a $250,000 warrant was issued for her arrest. She was tracked down in Okitbbeha County, Mississippi, on Jan. 19 and extradited back to DuPage County, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.
Authorities said Sykes doused the man with the water while he slept on a couch in their apartment on Jan. 2. She then hid the man's car keys while he watched the skin fall off his arms, according to the news release.
In the caption that appeared with the Snapchat video recorded by Sykes of the violent act, she wrote "I kinda feel bad now because got 2&3rd degree Burns from face to waist & they rushin him to the burn center but oh well..."
She went onto write how he cried and begged her to "drive him to the hospital." The man was able to finally get his keys away from Sykes and drove himself to a local hospital.
He was then transferred to the Loyola University Medical Center Burn Unit. He spent nearly two weeks at the hospital and underwent skin graft surgery.
Sykes has been charged in DuPage County with two counts of aggravated battery by caustic substance, a class X felony; and two counts of aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony.
Sykes remained in jail as of Tuesday afternoon, according to online jail records. She is next expected in court on March 22.
