CONCORD, NH — A local pizzeria was robbed on Monday and police reportedly have a suspect in custody. Just after 5:30 p.m., officers were sent to Checkmate Pizza on Washington Street for a robbery. Dispatch said a man, with a gun, robbed a clerk at the restaurant. The clerk then fought back against the assailant. The suspect then fled the area, according to dispatch. The clerk began chasing the suspect on Lyndon Street to Church Street. At Church Street, the clerk was able to tackle the man and got some of the money back, dispatch said. The caller was another person who witnessed the incident. They said a gun was not flashed only the threat of a gun was mentioned, dispatch said. The man was described as a young Black man, in his late teens or early 20s, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with a thin build wearing white pants and a dark-colored jacket or sweatshirt. Officers headed to the pizzeria while other officers fanned out into parts of the North End — including Lyndon, Church, Beacon, and Tremont streets as well as Jennings Drive. Did you like this story? Invite a friend to subscribe to Patch! The first arriving officer spoke with the clerk who was able to tackle the suspect and get most of the money back, according to scanner chatter. The clerk also did not see a gun but the gun threat was made, the officer said. The suspect was also reportedly bleeding from a hand after being tackled, according to an officer. At Jennings Drive, about 15 minutes after the initial incident, an officer found a suspect matching the description, and another officer was requested to the area. Later, the first officer reported he was under control and said the suspect he had in custody matched the description — including having a hand that was bleeding, according to scanner chatter. The man was taken into custody after the officer said, "He's admitting to involvement." Police requested video surveillance from the store from the owner as a part of the investigation.
