LOS ANGELES, CA — A fatal pileup Monday on the Harbor (110) Freeway was believed to be caused by a wrong-way driver, according to witnesses and authorities. The crash occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. on the southbound side of the Harbor Freeway just north of the Gardena (91) Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash prompted the CHP to shut down all southbound lanes and the Redondo Beach Boulevard on-ramp for hours. Lanes 1 and 2 were reopened about 3 a.m. and lanes 3, 4, 5 and 6 were reopened at 5:15 a.m. According to one witness, a sedan was headed northbound in the southbound number 3 lane just before the crash that may have caused at least one vehicle to overturn. Multiple vehicles were involved in the crash. A woman had to be freed from the wreckage of an SUV by firefighters and was rushed to a nearby hospital, according to a news videographer at the scene. Officers at the scene told him a wrong-way driver caused the crash, he said. City News Service and Patch Staffer Paige Austin contributed to this report.
