Local Man Completes 5-Hour Spacewalk Monday

LOS ANGELES, CA — The world watched as Pomona native Victor Glover took his morning walk Monday. The NASA engineer took a five-hour spacewalk at the International Space Station, completing work to replace the batteries for the station's solar arrays and upgrading external cameras. The project was four years in the making. It was Glover's second spacewalk. Last week, he completed a spacewalk that took more than six hours. His first glimpse of the universe from space was overwhelming. "What a beautiful view," he said as he took his first steps in space. Glover now has spent more than 12 hours spacewalking, according to NASA. He has another spacewalk scheduled in the near future in which he and astronaut Kate Rubins will work outside the station on a project to increase the International Space Station's power supply. In all, space station crew members have conducted 234 spacewalks to keep the orbiting laboratory operating. He's slated to join an even more exclusive club of astronauts. Glover is among the crew chosen for NASA's Artemis program, which aims to land the first woman and next man on the moon by 2024. If Glover sets foot on the moon, he would be the first Black astronaut to do so. Glover, was selected as an astronaut in 2013. The U.S. Navy Commander earned a bachelor's degree in general engineering and master's degrees in flight test engineering, systems engineering, and military operational art and science. He piloted the Crew-1 Dragon Resilience and is currently serving as an Expedition 64 flight engineer aboard the International Space Station.
