GSU Student Wins Emmy For Environmental Documentary

ATLANTA — A Georgia State University student won an Emmy for his environmental documentary. Kariuki Gakio, of Atlanta, won the 2020 Southeast Emmy in the Best Documentary category for Health/Science - Program Feature/Segment for his film titled "Our Plastic World." The documentary focuses on the destructive effect plastic pollution has on the environment. Gakio is a film and media major at GSU. The film garnered five awards in the 41st annual Telly Awards, including a pair of silvers and three bronze awards, according to a statement from GSU. "It's always exciting when one of our students finds a way to turn their ethical stance into a compelling story in images," School of Film, Media & Theatre Director Greg Smith said in a statement. "Gakio's documentary aims to make the world a better place, and we're delighted that his passion and craft are receiving the recognition they deserve."
