Herdsperson Job Description Duties as a Herdsperson will include but are not limited to: 1. General Duties: • Work closely with Herd Manager and other Herdspersons to complete daily tasks. • Effectively carry out assigned tasks. • Participate in trainings to ensure you are performing your duties safely and efficiently. 2. Caring for Animals: • Observation of cattle daily for heats, sickness, lameness, mastitis or any abnormality and treating according to established programs. • Vaccinating and dry-off of cattle. • Administering IM, SQ, and IV injections. • Routine sorting and moving of cattle from barn to barn and/or group to group. • Fresh cow maternity care, which includes assisting with difficult calvings. • Feed, water, and milk down animals. • Cattle breeding. • Sick and fresh cow programs followed daily which includes temperatures, observation, analysis, palpating, checking for DA’s. • Maintain cow identification – tagging. 3. Aseptic milk sample collection, plating, interpretation, and assignment of treatment. 4. Manage pregnancy check and heat synchronization programs. 5. Milking: • Assist with the milking of fresh cow and treated groups daily. 6. Feeding: • Collect forage samples, run dry matters, and change dry matter values in feed management software. • Determine feed amounts for heifer, dry cow, and lactating groups. 7. Operation of small equipment: • Skidloader – for barn and bunk cleaning and pushing up feed. 8. Utilize Dairy Comp software for herd management. 9. Help supervise milking staff. 10. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: • Previous experience with working with dairy cows including, heat detection, sickness, lameness, and treating accordingly. • AI breeding experience. • Experience with sorting and moving groups of cows. • Experience with fresh cow maternity care. • Ability to operate Dairy Comp 305 and other computer software. • Experience in feeding and milking cows. • Ability to operate farm machinery. • Able to lift 50 lbs. • Must have a valid driver’s license. Education: • High school graduate or GED required.
