ARE WE READY FOR THE WILDERNESS? Our 40-day journey in Lent is intended to remind us of Jesus’ time in the desert wilderness following his baptism by John. It is a time to assess and renew; to confront our demons; to confess our weakness; to gain strength from the Spirit of God; and to make anew the commitment we made in baptism to be true to the covenant promise into which God calls us. We start by symbolically steeling ourselves against temptation by getting rid of all the delicious food we don’t eat in Lent – or at least the goodies our medieval ancestors were forbidden to eat: rich foods with lots of fats and sweets – so we take the bacon, sausage, butter, syrup, eggs, milk and rich flour out of the larder and prepare a Shrove Tuesday feast in which we consume it all. Many of us fast during Lent, giving up some food or activity that probably isn’t really good for us – and hoping our Lenten practice will lead to a longer commitment. Many take on something new – an exercise program, a new mode of prayer/meditation, scripture or other spiritual reading, or perhaps participation in a Lenten program offered in our or a neighboring parish. Whatever goal, activity or sacrifice we make for in Lent, let’s allow ourselves a wilderness time when we can be still and know the presence of God in all the places of our lives. Easter will come and we will rejoice – but let’s first make the journey.
