Description

Join us for a guided tour of Stagville focused on the legacies of slavery. How did power, profit, and freed people shape Durham's history? Discover the connections between the early history of Durham and one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. This small guided tour will highlight the post-Emancipation history of Stagville. Hear stories of how freed people built up Durham, how the Cameron family's wealth influenced North Carolina, and how sharecropping shaped the lives of African American families at Stagville. This tour will last approximately 75 minutes, including both walking and driving. All stops will be outdoors. Each tour is limited to 12 participants. All historic buildings have ramps and accessible entrances. Some walking may be on uneven or wet ground. Visitors are expected to follow the “Three W’s” as outlined by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services – WEAR a cloth mask over your nose and mouth, WAIT in line at least six feet away from others, and WASH your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer. If you are experiencing symptoms of illness, we ask that you postpone your visit.
