NEW YORK CITY — Yankee Stadium will pitch into the coronavirus vaccination effort, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. Cuomo on Friday officially announced the famed baseball stadium will host a mass vaccination site. "You cannot play baseball when you come, but you can come to Yankee stadium," he said. A joint effort by the state, New York City and the Yankees organization made the long-awaited "mega site" possible, Cuomo said. Mayor Bill de Blasio previously said the city was working to get it off the ground, but that effort faced a delay as the city's vaccine supply dried up. Cuomo said New York's National Guard will build and oversee the site, which is located in the Bronx — the borough with the highest COVID-19 positivity rate in the city at a state-measured 7.06 percent. The Yankees organization issued a statement proclaiming their "honor" to help provide people in the Bronx access to coronavirus vaccines. "The Yankees are committed to doing everything in their power to provide this vitally needed service to fight COVID-19," the statement reads.
