ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst saw the lowest weekly rate of increase in new coronavirus cases since the onset of the crisis. As of Sunday, the city saw 70 new coronavirus cases in the last week, or a 2 percent increase, for a total of 3,531. That is down from the previous week's 2.6 percent. Since early October, the number of local coronavirus cases has more than tripled in Elmhurst. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. As of Sunday, coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst since the pandemic's beginning stayed the same at 57 over the last week. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.6 percent. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,126,301, up 2.3 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 19,243 state residents. Nationally, 25.9 million people have caught the virus, up 4.2 percent from the week before. A total of 438,035 people have died from the virus in the United States.
