DARIEN, IL — Darien saw the lowest weekly number of new coronavirus cases since late October, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, Darien had 1,421 coronavirus cases, up 38 from a week before, or a 2.7 percent increase. The previous four weeks' increases, in chronological order, were 7.5 percent, 4.5 percent, 3.7 percent and 3.9 percent. The city's number of local deaths from the coronavirus increased by one in the last week, now totaling 18. That works out to less than a thousandth of Darien's population. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population, but only 2.1 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload. As of Sunday, Darien had 65.7 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than most of its neighbors. The figure compares to 65.2 in La Grange Park, 67.6 in Western Springs, 71.4 in Hinsdale, 74.3 in DuPage County, 75.5 in Elmhurst, 78.7 in Clarendon Hills, 82.2 in suburban Cook County, 86.3 in Burr Ridge and 91.3 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,126,301, up 2.3 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 19,243 state residents. Nationally, 25.9 million people have caught the virus, up 4.2 percent from the week before. A total of 438,035 people have died from the virus in the United States.
