PHOENIXVILLE, PA — The food distribution program in Phoenixville Area School District has added a new day and time to pick up meals at the high school. In addition to the Wednesday distribution already in place, food pickup will also be available on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Phoenixville Area High School drop-off loop across from Washington Field, according to an announcement from PASD School Board of Directors President Blake Emmanuel. The added Tuesday distribution begins on Feb. 2. Emmanuel's announcement said distribution included breakfast and lunch for anyone ages 0-18 and added, "No questions asked, just show up." Volunteers run the USDA program that offers meals to those in need as the coronavirus pandemic has increased food insecurity and placed many in need because of job losses or otherwise diminished incomes. In 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the percentage of Pennsylvania children facing food insecurity will rise to 23.8 percent — up from 15.1 percent in 2018 — an increase of 57.6 percent, according to a series of data analyses reports by Feeding America. Many of these children facing food insecurity rely on the national school breakfast and lunch program.
