Press release from the Carlsbad Unified School District: January 28, 2021 As shared in a previous communication, on January 14 we learned that a new public health directive from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) would not allow our middle and high schools to move to Phase 3 of our phased reopening plan (which would have been a hybrid schedule for students to attend two days per week). On January 20 our Board tasked us with developing a plan to get as many students on campus as possible, in any model possible, as quickly as possible - while adhering to the limitations of a "cohort" model as described by CDPH. You can learn more about "cohorts" in this CDPH memo. On January 27, we shared with the Board a high-level overview of how we can bring a number of middle and high school students on campus under the current California Department of Public Health guidelines. While there are many details to be worked out, here's the general concept: Small, fixed cohorts of students will engage in Distance Learning from a classroom on campus.Students will be assigned a "homeroom" teacher; they'll bring their chromebook and headphones, and will participate in Distance Learning from their homeroom on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.We know relationships are extremely important. The goal will be to place students with a teacher they already know; preferably with a teacher they currently have on their schedule. When possible, struggling students will be strategically placed with the teacher of the class in which they are having the most challenges.Teachers will supervise the students in their classroom, but will not be actively engaged in direct instruction with those students, as teachers will need to continue to teach their Distance Learning classes online from the classroom. To be clear: this is a supervision model, not an instructional model. It has been suggested that some students will benefit from the structure of reporting to the classroom each day and engaging in Distance Learning from a safe space with consistent WiFi. We're sure this will not be of interest to all students or families. In order to know how many students are interested in participating, we plan to send out a simple interest form to parents early next week. We hope to be able to determine interest, clarify expectations, assign students, and notify families by February 11. We'll include additional details when we send out the interest form, so that families can make an informed decision based on what the model is and what the model is not. We know you have many questions; please bear with us as we work with principals, counselors, and teachers to finalize all of the details. Stay tuned for more information shortly.
