Jean-Michel was a Black graffiti artist and painter who became popular in New York City in the 1980s when he was still a teenager. JM's dad was from the island of Haiti and his mom was from the US territory of Puerto Rico. When JM was a young boy, he was hit by a car and had to stay in bed for several months while he got better. During this time, he read the entire Gray's Anatomy science book and became interested in what human beings look like on the inside. When Basquiat grew up and began drawing, creating graffiti in public spaces, and making and selling his paintings, he used a "child-like" style that often included x-ray views of his characters.
