5 Schools Still Closed On The UWS Due To Coronavirus Cases

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Coronavirus cases have temporarily closed down five schools on the Upper West Side, four of which were shut down for the first time. P.S./I.S. 342, I.S. 44 P.S. 166, and P.S. 145 join P.S. 87 as schools closed down in the neighborhood as of Friday. While a handful of new schools have closed in the past week, a collection of other schools has reopened, including P.S. 75, P.S. 84, P.S. 811, P.S. 199, and the West Side YMCA. According to the Department of Education's guidelines, school buildings must automatically close pending an investigation when at least two COVID-19 cases linked to each other are confirmed in separate classrooms. The closure is extended when the infections occurred outside of school or a link between them cannot be determined. Here are more details about the five schools closed. P.S./I.S. 342, Riverside Center at 300 West 61st Street: The school closed on Jan. 22 and is set to stay closed until Jan. 31. The closure happened because of cases found in classrooms in The Riverside School for Makers and Artists. I.S. 44, 100 West 77th Street: The school closed on Jan. 28 and is set to stay closed until Feb. 6. The closure happened because of cases found in classrooms in The Anderson School. P.S. 166, 132 West 89th Street: The school closed on Jan. 22 and is set to stay closed until Jan. 31. The closure happened because of cases found in The Richard Rodgers School of The Arts and Technology. P.S. 84, 32 West 92nd Street: The school closed on Jan. 29 and is expected to reopen on Jan. 30. The closure happened because of cases found in classrooms in the Lilian Weber Middle School. P.S. 145, 150 West 105th Street: The school closed on Jan. 29 and is expected to reopen on Jan. 30.
