Description

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Susan Jones was recently sworn in as Tuscaloosa County tax collector, filling a role held by longtime public service Peyton Cochrane, who recently retired after 31 years of service to the county. Jones was appointed to the position by Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey and sworn in Wednesday by Probate Judge and County Commission Chair Rob Robertson. Robertson told Patch he received notification from the governor's office last week and Jones immediately went to work in her new role to fill the unexpired term of her predecessor after previously serving as deputy tax collector. Cochrane was first elected tax collector in 1988 and saw numerous upgrades and improvements to the office during his time, ranging from day-to-day operations to technological advancements. His last race in 2018 saw him run unopposed as a Republican to secure what would become his final term in office. The Tuscaloosa County Tax Collector's Office is responsible for collecting taxes based on each parcel's assessment and disbursing it to the various agencies throughout the county. Patch has reached out to both Cochrane and Jones for comment. Follow Patch here for updates or on Facebook and Twitter.
