Press release from Brookfield Democratic Town Committee: Jan. 29, 2021 The Brookfield Democratic Town Committee (BDTC) will be holding a monthly virtual book club called, "Reading With Intention," starting Monday, February 1st. Community members of all ages are invited to join. The first selection for the book club is titled, "Me and White Supremacy: Combat Racism, Change the World, and Become a Good Ancestor," by Layla F. Saad. The committee has generously donated five copies of the book to the Brookfield Public Library which were purchased from the local independent bookstore, Byrd's Books. The BDTC invites community members to check out these books from the library or to purchase a copy of their own and reflect on their own personal complicity with white supremacy. "We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the work he began to create space in this Nation for all people who call this place home by taking a step towards self-reflection. The BDTC invites community members to read this book privately and self-reflect over the 28-day journey or join the virtual book club to talk about their experiences with this book as the club works through the journal prompts and reflects on how to become good ancestors and to change the world by combating racism. We will be holding a kickoff meeting on January 31st at 7:00 PM to briefly discuss the format of the book and future meeting dates," said BDTC member, Shannon Riley, who will be moderating the book club. The mission of the Brookfield Democrats is to create a positive vision for Brookfield's future that preserves the vibrancy of Brookfield and enhances opportunities for all residents.
