Study: Napping Improved Brain Performance The study followed over 2,000 healthy people over the age of 60 in China. Each participant got around the same amount of sleep at night—between six to seven hours. A series of health and cognition questionnaires were given to participants after they either didn’t nap or took one of anywhere from five minutes to two hours. The results showed that those who napped performed far better on the assessments than those who did not. Immune System Plays a Role Researchers put forth a theory that those who napped had better cognitive function due to the nap helping to keep midday inflammation down. Sleep helps regulate the body’s immune response, which can reduce inflammation. Some researchers also believe that the survey participants who didn’t nap may have been sleep deprived because most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night to be able to function optimally. More Research Needed More research is needed on people of all ages, especially those under the age of 60, to see if they can duplicate the results of this study.
