LEVITTOWN, NY — Division Avenue High School senior Nikhil Keer is one of 25 high school seniors from New York State to be nominated for the 2021 United States Presidential Scholars Program. Keer, an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and a recipient of the AP Capstone Diploma, is currently enrolled in five AP courses and has already taken seven AP courses during his high school career, according to news release from the school district. He is involved in Division Avenue High School's business, national, social studies and world language honor societies. Keer is the president and captain of the school's Science Olympiad, a member of Mathletes and the Key Club, and serves as a peer leader. He is a junior black belt in mixed martial arts and an assistant martial arts instructor, a Levittown Public Library teen advisory board member and a volunteer for the Levittown DoSomething Club. New York State Sen. Kevin Thomas, who nominated Keer, said he was proud to recommend him for the program and that being chosen as one of 20 students by the state's education department is a "prestigious honor and a "testament" to Keer's "character and academic achievements." He described Keer as "an exceptionally driven, intelligent, and civic-minded young man," and said that he is "highly impressed with his outstanding" high school accomplishments. "His hard work and dedication will undoubtedly lead to success in the future, and I am pleased to congratulate him on this nomination," Thomas said. Keer will continue on in the scholars program with the hope of becoming a semifinalist next, school officials said. Semifinalists are expected to be notified in mid-April and scholars will be notified in May if they will receive a medallion as part of the program. The program honors up to 161 students each year and selects them based on excellence in education. The students are selected by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars as a result of their academic success, artistic excellence, community service, essays, leadership, school evaluations and transcripts and their demonstrated commitment to high ideals, according to the news release.
