Come learn about the essential archaeological finds of Israel, which illuminate our understanding of ancient and modern Israel/Palestine. ***Zoom link provided upon registration.*** Archaeology has played an important role both in the creation of Israeli and Jewish identity as well as in gentile perceptions of ancient (and modern) Israel/Palestine. In this talk, Dr. David Ilan will present ten of the most significant archaeological finds from Israel, starting with Prehistory and ending in late Antiquity. The discussion will also cover why each of these are important and relevant for us in the modern world. A native of Los Angeles, David llan is the director of the Nelson Glueck School of Biblical Archaeology at the Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem. He has excavated at Tel Arad, Tel Megiddo and Tel Dan. He teaches at the Hebrew Union College and has taught at Tel Aviv University, Hebrew University and at Johns Hopkins University. He specializes in mortuary archaeology, religion and ritual in the Chalcolithic period, the Middle Bronze Age and the early Iron Age of the southern Levant. Since 2005, he has directed the excavations at Tel Dan in northern Israel. He is the editor of the journal NGSBA Archaeology.
