NEWARK, NJ — A Newark city councilwoman has been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2021 Large Cities Council.
LaMonica McIver, who represents Newark's Central Ward, was elected to a one-year term and will provide strategic direction and guidance for NLC's federal advocacy agenda and policy priorities, a news release stated.
"I am honored to have been chosen to represent the great City of Newark as a member of NLC. I look forward to adding my voice to the issues, challenges, and concerns that many cities are facing and to work with NLC to advocate for not just the City of Newark but to communities around the country."
As a Large Cities Council member, McIver will play a key role among a diverse group of local leaders in shaping NLC's policy positions and advocating on behalf of U.S. cities and towns before Congress, with the administration and at home.
The appointment was announced by NLC President Kathy Maness, councilmember, Lexington, South Carolina.
"Our member councils are the voices of what's happening on the ground in our communities," Maness said. "I am proud to have Councilwoman McIver join NLC's Large Cities Council on behalf of her residents. Together with a team of local leaders from around the country, we will work to solve the most pressing challenges facing our communities."
The leadership of this year's council will consist of Chair Amy Fowler, council member, Salt Lake City, UT, Vice Chair Gilbert Villegas, alderman, Chicago, IL, and Vice Chair Jeanette Herron, councilwoman, Bridgeport, CT.
