ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst School District 205 is joining more than 100 districts nationwide against companies that sell vaping products.
This week, the school board voted unanimously to take part in the litigation.
The lawsuit seeks to compensate districts for the costs they have incurred in the fight against vaping such as vape detectors, policy changes, disciplinary proceedings, and staff and attorney time.
The district said the litigation will be handled as a contingency case, with no upfront fees or costs to the district. In other words, the lawyers would collect only if they obtain a monetary recovery for the district.
Nationwide, 20 percent of high school students and 5 percent of middle school students were vaping this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
