Feds: Brother of Check-Stealing Postal Worker Charged In Scheme

CHICAGO — Akeem Kosoko, of Chicago, was indicted on federal charges Monday for allegedly conspiring with a U.S. Postal Service employee and others to steal and sell government-issued checks distributed under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act according to federal authorities. Kosoko, 26, appeared in federal court in Chicago where he was charged with one count of conspiracy to steal mail and government funds, three counts of embezzlement of government property and three counts of receipt of stolen mail. An arraignment has not been scheduled. Kosoko's brother Ahmed Kosoko, 35, previously was indicted on charges of conspiracy to steal mail and government funds. According to Monday's indictment, the younger Kosoko worked with his brother, a postal carrier, and others to have the aid checks taken from the mail and sold to others. The checks were issued in 2020 by the U.S. Treasury.
