NEWTOWN, PA — A hacker is likely to blame for a several offensive emails that were sent from a student's email account on Saturday.
The emails, which contained anti-Semitic language and hate speech, were received by numerous students from both Council Rock high schools and by Council Rock staff members. The incident led to the district disabling its email system and apologizing to whose who received the email.
An investigation has determined that the student's email account was compromised and fraudulently accessed, the district said. The school district will continue to work with law enforcement to determine who hacked the student's account.
"This type of hacking of an account has become all too frequent in recent times," Superintendent Robert Fraser said in an email to the Council Rock community.
The district's information technology department is instituting additional precautionary measures to improve its district-issued student email passwords and mitigate fraudulent email activity, he added.
