MECKLENBURG COUNTY, NC — North Carolina Sen. Jeff Jackson is running for U.S. Senate in 2022, he announced Monday. The race for the North Carolina Senate seat, which is opening up upon the retirement of Republican Sen. Richard Burr, is expected to be pivotal in the equation for party control of the U.S. Senate, CNN reported. Jackson, 38, is a Captain in the Army National Guard, a former assistant district attorney and has served in the state legislature since 2014. The Mecklenburg County Democrat made the announcement in a video featuring his wife and children filmed inside their home. "I've decided to run for U.S. Senate," he said. "We're going to make it a 100-county campaign." Jackson said he plans to hold town halls in every county, "and we'll use what we learn to build an agenda that's actually tailored to our state, not an agenda that's imported from D.C. or from donors." The Senate race is expected to lead to a hotly contested Democratic primary in the state. Lara Trump, a North Carolina native and daughter-in-law of Donald Trump, has also indicated she is considering a run for the seat.
