CMPD Nabs 22-Year-Old Murder Suspect During Traffic Stop

CHARLOTTE, NC — A 22-year-old man faces a list of charges including murder following a traffic stop early Wednesday, hours after a shooting in north Charlotte left one dead and another with non-life threatening injuries. The Jan. 26 shooting occurred around 9 p.m. in the 900 block of West Sugar Creek Road, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Officers responded to the location after receiving a call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon, and found two victims had been shot. Jyasin Kasion Dearmon, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene, CMPD said. The second gunshot victim was transported to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center for treatment for their injuries. During the investigation, detectives identified a vehicle of interest, which officers later spotted around 3 a.m. Thursday morning, CMPD said. Officers pulled the vehicle over and during the traffic stop, arrested Jawonn Mcllwain, 22, on the charge of carrying a concealed weapon. Mcllwain was taken to CMPD's Law Enforcement Center, where he was questioned by homicide detectives. Following the interview, he was charged attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspire to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, and murder, CMPD said. Mcllwain was later transported to the custody of the Mecklenburg County's Sheriff Department. CMPD said the investigation into the case remains active and ongoing and said that anyone with information is asked to anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
