Description
American exceptionalism is what makes America so bad at dealing with a pandemic. Other places around the globe don't have the failures we americans have. We lack or rather have lacked a unifying message from the top, and that means that every state is essentially it's own country, and there is no border control between the states. So with no unifying leadership and a policy from the top, that states fight with each other for the things they need.
Our exceptionalism attitude has stunted our ability to deal with a crisis like we have today with Covid-19. Many folks living in the US believe their personal freedom of choice is more important than the good of everybody. Repeatedly and consistantly it's been implied by right wing, wing nuts that virus lockdowns and restrictions are contrary to the american way of life. People moving freely across none protected state borders of city and state, just about guarantees more folks will aquire this thing and possibly die.
In the US, the choice to put yourself in harms way is what it means to be free and that choice has created a scene where cities and towns have failed to enforce safe policy. Even suggesting that any policy for the public good is anti-american.
Donald J Trump was the perfect picture of the above mentality. Refusing to wear a mask. Insisting on large gatherings with no protections. Insisting the pandemic wasn't real and it would just go away after election day. In short we were discouraged by federal leadership from making sacrifices in support of a larger effort.
Some americans who claim they love america just are unable to suspend their individual freedoms in the face of a virus, and that my friends will be the downfall of America..
The good news.. There is new leadership in the whitehouse.
