WESTFORD, MA — The Westford Police Department is warning residents to be vigilant against a scam in town. A resident recently reported they received two telephone calls from someone claiming to be accepting donations on behalf of the "Marine Corps League." The resident told police his caller ID listed the call as coming from the Westford Town Clerk's Office. Police said the resident agreed to make a donation to the Marine Corps League and made arrangements to have someone from the organization pick up a check at his residence, believing the call was legitimate. But shortly after he did, he called the clerk's office and discovered no one from the office had called him and learned it was a scam. "It's important our citizens are aware these type of scams," police said in a statement reminding residents never to provide any personal information to anyone they do not know over the phone or in person. "Spoofing" is a common way scammers disguise their phone numbers using another, police said.
